How to Apply Double Flap Valve Technology to Solve Performance Problems with Line Chargers in Cement Plant Pneumatic Conveying Systems

Jack Hilbert, Pneumatic Conveying Consultants, LLC, and Kevin Guay, Plattco Corporation, USA, outline how to apply Double Flap Valve technology to solve performance problems in this World Cement, April 2015, article.

From a financial perspective, all cement plant
operators know they have a lot riding on the efficiency of their pneumatic conveying systems.
From a technical perspective, however, it is what is
riding in the system and how well it is being conveyed that is the key focus. When the system works well to convey raw meal, finished cement or baghouse dust, the plant can efficiently meet its production and financial objectives. When it does not, the costs can be high.

Often problems with pneumatic conveying systems
can be traced to the line charger. This article will
discuss the inherent performance challenges cement plants face in conveying various materials throughout the plant. It will also discuss how the unique design of double flap airlock valves can help cement plant operators to overcome problems in their pneumatic conveying systems.

Plattco Corporation Launches EZ Seat, an Innovative New Seal for Double Flap Valves that Reduces Maintenance Costs, Improves Conveying System Performance

With EZ Seat, one person can replace the wearable edge on a valve in as little as 10 minutes without taking the valve offline. Successful pilot implementations completed in cement, asphalt, and energy plant conveying systems.

PLATTSBURGH, NY – March 16, 2015 – Plattco Corporation, producer of the most advanced material handling valves for industrial applications, today launched EZ Seat, an innovative way to replace the wear edge on Double Flap Airlock® Valves to dramatically reduce maintenance time and cost, and increase valve performance. In several pilot implementations, EZ Seat has delivered significant business benefit in systems conveying cement kiln dust, limestone dust, sandstone dust, fly ash and other abrasive materials.

With Plattco’s EZ Seat, plant operators no longer have to replace the entire wear component of their Plattco Double Flap Airlock Valve during maintenance procedures. Instead, they can simply replace a bolt-on, light weight wear edge. In most instances, the EZ Seat replaceable component is approximately one-fifth the weight of the entire wear component. This enables one person to perform maintenance quickly and safely instead of requiring the aid of an extra person and taking up to six times as long.

Plattco Awarded Patent for Industrial Valve Seal that Increases Performance of High Pressure Pneumatic Conveying Systems

Plattco’s High Pressure Mechanical Shaft Seal is a breakthrough for conveying abrasive materials like cement, lime, gypsum and fly ash long distances, at high speeds, under high pressure

PLATTSBURGH, NY – September 17, 2014 – Plattco Corporation, producer of the most advanced material handling valves for industrial applications, today announced that it has been awarded a patent for a unique High Pressure Mechanical Shaft Seal that dramatically improves the performance and maintenance-free operation of industrial valves in high velocity, high pressure conveying systems.

The Plattco High Pressure Mechanical Shaft Seal features a unique design that enables industrial valves to operate flawlessly over long time periods in conveying systems that maintain air pressure of up to 42 PSI (pounds per square inch). The Plattco High Pressure Mechanical Shaft Seal is made using corrosion-resistant 304 stainless steel and can operate without the use of an external air source and without adjustment over long time periods.

Double Flap Airlock Valve Technology Critical to Efficient Melt Shop Baghouse Operation
By Kevin Guay, Senior Sales Engineer Research & Development

If you operate a steel mini mill, you know how critical it is to have a melt shop baghouse that operates efficiently and without interruption. After all, when your melt shop baghouse is down, you have to cease or curtail your operations. And that costs you money. For steel mills with recurring unplanned baghouse downtime, the root cause of the problem is often the use of rotary discharge valves that bridge, ham and plug.

Although rotary discharge valves are in widespread use in melt shop baghouses, there are fundamental shortcomings in the design that make them ill-suited for the unique demands of the baghouse environment. By contrast, the design of double flap valves has proven to be inherently better suited for the steel mill baghouse environment.

Customer Driven Manufacturing - An Overview
By John Kabbes, President John Kabbes & Assoc.

This is the first of several articles describing Customer Driven Manufacturing (CDM) and individual planning, execution and management elements of a complete operating approach.

Each element makes critical contributions to the overall approach but also function as business processes. CDM may be implemented in any factory desiring an immediate improvement in delivery performance, lower inventory investment and increased labor productivity. Pneumatic Conveying - Issues & Answers
Starting with the Basics

By Jack Hilbert, Pneumatic Conveying Consultants

Pneumatic Conveying has often been referred to as a "black art" rather than a science because equipment suppliers are very reluctant to provide information relative to how they arrived at a particular recommendation for any given application. Their respective experience is a key factor in their ability to provide equipment and solutions. [click here to read this newsletter]

Part 2 - Key Terms & Definitions You Need To Know

By Jack Hilbert, Pneumatic Conveying Consultants

In this our second article on Pneumatic Conveying, we will continue to build your library of knowledge about pneumatic conveying systems and components. For this installment, we are looking at some of the key terms and providing definitions so that, as we refer to these terms and phrases in future articles -- you will know exactly what is being discussed and referenced. Replace Rotary Valves to Improve Performance
When a wood waste-to-electricity power plant began replacing rotary valves on their flyash baghouse in 2004, the facility realized a significant reduction in turbulence in the baghouse above the valves, an increase in bag life by many years and lower emissions. The plant manager credits Plattco's Pollution Control Valves (PCV) and their superior ability to seal over the rotary valves. [click here to read this article]

Increase Valve Life / Decrease Downtime
When most valves are ready to call it quits, Plattco valves are just getting started! Our in-line maintenance feature coupled with our expert Field Service program will mean decades of like-new performance at peak operating efficiency.

Plattco invented the first Double Flap Airlock® Valves in 1960 to eliminate leakage with sintering and palletizing in the mining industry, and for handling of cement clinker. We have established an unmatched reputation for correcting process design problems in applications that involve high temperature, high pressure, and abrasive or corrosive materials.
